The Secret Weapon of Sports Psychology

The complex stress of competition can cause contestants to react physically and mentally in a way which will negatively affect performance. Psychology is a key weapon within the athlete’s armoury in gaining the winning edge. The athlete will choose an overall goal. For example, confidence results from the comparison an athlete makes between the goal and their ability. The athlete will have certainty if they believe they can achieve their goal. If athletes see that they’re achieving their short-term goals and moving towards their long goals, then confidence grows. An athlete’s ability to manage their emotions when faced with adversity, and to even stay positive as well, is important to successful performance.

Superior sports performance demands that the contestant be totally committed to varied goals over a long period of time. Many things in life can interfere with these goals so there are aspects of lifestyle that need to be properly managed. Setting goals with the athlete will raise their feelings of value, allow them to own their goals, and promote even greater committment to achieving them.

Social factors are also huge and many persons can contribute to an athlete’s levels of commitment with acceptable levels of support and positive feedback. This is even more essential during times of injury, malady and poor performance.

International Journal of Sports Psychology

This journal publishes empirical and theoretical contributions within the human movement sciences from everywhere around the world. Manuscripts associated with scientific discipline, sport pedagogy, exercise and sport performance are suited to the Journal’s scope. IJSP’s aims are to spread results of rigorous and relevant studies, to reveal positions and commentaries relating to theory, and to confirm or contradict previous findings. IJSP entertains numerous methodologies encompassing coherence among epistemology, statistical , tools, applied math or clinical analyses and discussion or potential applications. Qualitative and quantitative analyses are both of interest too.
